Why you should start pursuing your dreams right now

Have you guys read the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho? If not, do it. I love his books and especially this one. It is about a boy who is trying to follow his path, his destiny. He comes across numerous challenges he has to overcome to be able to pursue his dreams, but he goes on and the journey forms his character and shapes him as a human being. The book is filled with awesome and inspiring quotes, as you will notice since I put a few of them in this article.

If someone isn’t what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.

Everyone in life has some kind of destiny. Some kind of passion you want follow or a dream you know, deep inside, you want to pursue. However, not everyone will go for it. There are countless reasons to not do it. To take your mind of off it and hide it, somewhere deep down, what you really want to do. Others will say you cannot do it, that it will be too dangerous and not good for you, or for them.

Pursuing your dreams might be scary. You are afraid. You have all the right to be afraid, because with chasing your dreams, comes risk. Risk that it can all go wrong, that everything will turn out worse that it used to be. The risk that you will lose it all, and end up somewhere in a dark place. And it will happen. Sometimes, you wíll lose it all. You wíll have setbacks and points in your life where you don’t know what to do. By taking risks, you have to get outside your comfort zone. You have to fight the part of you who wants security, to relax, the part that does not want change. And yes, that is scary. It will make you vulnerable, doubt will kick in. It is going to make you uncertain. Definitely.

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.

But you know what? It is going to be worth it. Because, pursuing your dreams, and doing what you really want to do with your life.. is basically the best thing you cán do with your life. Follow the path that has been laid out for you. It will make you a better person, and everyone around you a better person as well. You will have faith in yourself. You are going to know what you are capable of doing. You will be surprised about all the wonderful and beautiful things you will be capable of. You will never have to ask yourself again ‘what if..’, you can be proud of your accomplishments and help others, to do the same.

It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting

My dream was, and still is, to travel. To discover the world, to go on adventures, but also to help other people and the world forward. When I was doing my bachelors, I was really uncertain about my English. I hated to learn the language and was scared. However, to be able to pursue my dream to travel I knew I had to learn English and I decided to do my internship in an English speaking country to force myself to speak it and practice it. I was the only one of my class to go abroad. My school said they couldn’t help me. People around me said I couldn’t do it. I took a great risk, emailing random companies on Google and ignoring all the well-meant ‘good advices’. Anyway, from the moment I passed the security area on the airport, I knew I was on the right track. I was exited, but confident. I would definitely do it all again.

And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.

And actually, I will have to do it all again. Because pursuing your dreams doesn’t stop with one accomplishment. You have to go through the uncertainty every time again and again. It not that easy, but I promise you, it will be a hell of an awesome adventure.

Also, since I really love TED talks, take a look at this talk from Larry Smith about all the excuses of not following your dreams/career. Its a good one:

All quotes by Paulo Coelho. If you want, you can get The Alchemist here. And yes, if you buy something through this link I will earn a tiny little money from it, and it will all go to the continuation of this website. Thank you :)

What do you think? How can you pursue your dreams?

Dear Kim, thanks for your writing.
I read this while I still confused to give myself a try to chase my backpacking idea.

Your words has energized me again to be brave against the ordinary – what society wants me to be.
